Wychwood Sixth and GCSE Drama pupils went to The Oxford Playhouse on Tuesday to see Ian Hislop and Nick Newman’s The Wipers Times.
It tells the extraordinary true story, set in a bombed out building in the Belgian town of Ypres (mis- pronounced Wipers by British Soldiers) of two officers discovering a printing press and creating a satirical newspaper centred around the mud and mayhem of the trench warfare at the Somme. Following the whole school trip there in 2016 it was wonderful to see the girls developing their contextual understanding of the war, through still more extension.
Hilarity and poignant reflection made for an excellent night of theatre, which was enjoyed by all.
