A man reaps what he sows
22nd January 2019
‘It’s not fair’! I wonder how many times you have said that. If we look around the world its clear to see that bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people. There is no guaranteed link between the life we live and the good or bad things that come our way. It’s a bit like the weather – sunshine and showers fall on the good or bad alike and that ought to make us a little more careful in our judgement of others, if we are ever tempted to think a person deserves what they get!
So what are we to make of this quotation? It comes from the book of Galatians in the Bible and St Paul was writing in the context of his experience of living with a divided human nature. Elsewhere he writes with exasperation about how he knows what he should do, but frequently does just the opposite. We are pulled between fulfilment of natural desires (pizza and Netflix!) and things of the spirit which lead to growth (revising for examinations). Those sitting mocks this week I’m sure can relate to this as they struggle between effective revision and just about anything else! The seeds of effort need to be sown in areas of growth and that may mean a delay of gratification. Sacrifice has always been a part of the deal! So choose wisely and you are more likely to reap present and future benefits.
